More Junior Zoologists Graduate from Zoo School

Seventy more Junior Zoologists have graduated from BASIC Zoo School. We are so proud of our students, grades K-5th, who attended a 12-week series of Zoo School BASIC classes during Fall semester 2009. Classes were offered in Aubrey, Flower Mound and Frisco and the students met once a week to study all the major phyla of animals: arthropods, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Each week the students learned the common characteristics of each phyla, the body parts, survival adaptations and strategies, life cycles and fun facts – they even got to have a hands-on encounter with live animals each week! The students concluded the semester by becoming the teachers. Each student did an independent research project about their favorite animal and presented all they learned to their fellow students — and what great teachers they were! Students taught the other students all about everything from polar bears, to cave salamanders, to feral hogs, to hummingbirds. Amazing…once they turn 18 years old, they’re hired! Many of these students have moved on to ADVANCED Zoo School for Spring Semester. Congratulations to all our students for their hard efforts. They make our work a true pleasure.

It’s Time to Register for Spring Zoo School!

It’s that time again! Registration for our Spring 2010 Zoo Schools is now open. BASIC and ADVANCED Zoo Schools are being offered in Frisco, Lewisville and Rockwall. All the details and downloadable registration forms are now available online. Register early, as class size is limited and classes fill-up quickly — so don’t delay! Feel free to forward this announcement to your friends and other interested parents or to post it on your community’s newletters and websites. We need a minimum of 20 students for each class to be a "go" — help us to spread the word!

60 Graduates Become Junior Zookeepers — Congrats!

What a Spring semester! Zooniversity wrapped-up two large BASIC Zoo School classes, graduating more than 60 students – all of whom have proudly earned the title of "Junior Zookeeper."

BASIC Zoo School courses were offered Spring semester 2009 in Frisco and in Rockwall. In order to graduate, each K-4th grade student attended a semester-long series of weekly classes in their community and studied the the taxonomy and behaviors or all the major animal phyla: arthropods, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Each class ended with some hands-on moments with some favorite education animals.

"I liked Zoo School a lot! Although it went by too fast, it was a blast! The homework was even fun!" said Austin Vigil, Rockwall Zoo School graduate, age 9. "The prairie dog was my favorite animal. I like how furry they are and I now know how mean farmers and ranchers are to them," said Jacob Pointer, Frisco Zoo School graduate, age 6, who has graduated from two BASIC Zoo Schools and has already enrolled in one of the new ADVANCED Zoo Schools being offered this Fall.

BASIC Zoo School – Introduction to Zoology is again being offered for Fall semester 2009. Classes for K-4th grade homeschoolers are being held in Rockwall, Frisco and in Aubrey (new) and after-school classes are being held at The Levine Academy (Levine students only) in North Dallas. New for Fall is the launch of ADVANCED Zoo School – Animal Habitats & Conservation, an advanced course for 1st-5th grade students who’ve graduated from BASIC Zoo School or who have had previous exposure to 4th/5th grade-level life science. ADVANCED classes are forming in Little Elm and Frisco for Fall. Class size is limited and registration is already underway (registration forms are available online) and the registration deadline is August 1st, so don’t wait!

Zoo Schools are organized and marketed by volunteer site coordinators, usually parents or school administrators who are eager to bring fun, hands-on life science to their student group. We’d love to bring Zoo School to your community — contact us for all the details.
